Itinerary
Day 1: Arba Minch – Lake Chamo & Dorze Village
⦁ Morning (Arrival in Arba Minch):
⦁ Arrive in Arba Minch, either by flight from Addis Ababa (recommended to save time) or by starting your drive from Addis Ababa early in the morning (which would make this a very long first day).
⦁ Check into your hotel and have lunch.
⦁ Afternoon: Lake Chamo Boat Trip & Nechisar National Park
⦁ Embark on a boat trip on Lake Chamo, one of the two large lakes that flank Arba Minch (meaning “Forty Springs”).
⦁ This boat trip is famous for its “Crocodile Market,” a large concentration of huge Nile crocodiles basking on the shores. You’ll also see hippos in the water and a rich variety of birdlife, including pelicans, marabou storks, and kingfishers.
⦁ The boat trip also offers views of the “Bridge of God,” a narrow strip of land separating Lake Chamo from Lake Abaya, and the plains of Nechisar National Park, where you might spot zebras and various antelopes from a distance.
⦁ Late Afternoon: Dorze Village
⦁ Drive up to the Dorze village in the Gughe Mountains (about 45 minutes from Arba Minch).
⦁ The Dorze are renowned for their towering, beehive-shaped bamboo houses (some standing over 12 meters high) and their exceptional weaving skills.
⦁ Learn about their traditional lifestyle, sample their “kocho” (false banana bread), and witness their intricate cotton weaving process.
⦁ Evening:
⦁ Dinner and overnight in Arba Minch.
Day 2: Arba Minch – Konso – Turmi (Hamer & Bana Tribes)
⦁ Morning (7:30 AM): Drive to Konso
⦁ After breakfast, start your drive south towards the lower Omo Valley (approximately 3-4 hours to Konso).
⦁ Stop at the Konso cultural landscape, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Konso people are known for their elaborately terraced hillsides, fortified villages, and unique waga (carved wooden statues erected over graves of important clan members).
⦁ Explore a Konso village and learn about their unique agricultural practices and social structure.
⦁ Lunch: Have lunch in Konso.
⦁ Afternoon: Drive to Turmi & Hamer/Bana Villages
⦁ Continue your journey to Turmi (approx. 3-4 hours from Konso), the heartland of the Hamer people. The scenery becomes more arid as you descend into the Omo Valley.
⦁ Check into your lodge in Turmi.
⦁ In the late afternoon, visit a Hamer village. The Hamer are famous for their elaborate body adornments, distinctive hairstyles (women wear red ochre-laden dreadlocks), and vibrant ceremonies. Your guide will facilitate respectful interactions.
⦁ If there’s a local market day (Mondays in Turmi, Thursdays in Key Afer, Saturdays in Dimeka), you might visit one for a lively cultural exchange.
⦁ Optional: If a Bull Jumping Ceremony (a Hamer rite of passage for young men) is taking place, your guide will try to arrange a visit. These are spontaneous but incredible cultural experiences.
⦁ Evening:
⦁ Dinner and overnight in Turmi.
Day 3: Turmi – Omorate (Dassanech Tribe) – Turmi (Hamer Culture)
⦁ Morning (Early Start): Dassanech Tribe (Omorate)
⦁ After an early breakfast, drive to Omorate (approx. 1.5-2 hours from Turmi), located on the banks of the Omo River.
⦁ Cross the Omo River by local dugout canoe to visit a village of the Dassanech (Geleb) tribe. They are known for their intricate body scarification and unique settlements. Learn about their pastoralist way of life.
⦁ Late Morning/Lunch:
⦁ Return to Turmi for lunch.
⦁ Afternoon: Hamer Cultural Immersion
⦁ Spend more time immersed in Hamer culture. This could involve:
⦁ Visiting another Hamer village to observe daily life.
⦁ Searching for an Evangadi dance (a traditional Hamer night dance), which often happens after market days or ceremonies.
⦁ Exploring the local market in Turmi if it’s a Monday.
⦁ Evening:
⦁ Dinner and overnight in Turmi.
Day 4: Turmi – Key Afer (Bana/Ari Markets) – Jinka (Mursi Tribe)
⦁ Morning (8:00 AM): Drive to Key Afer Market (if Thursday)
⦁ Depart from Turmi, driving north towards Jinka.
⦁ If today is Thursday, stop at the vibrant Key Afer Market. This is a fantastic melting pot where different tribes, including Hamer, Bana, Ari, and Tsemay, come to trade goods and socialize. It’s a prime opportunity for photography and cultural observation. The Bana tribe is closely related to the Hamer in language and customs.
⦁ Late Morning/Lunch:
⦁ After the market, continue to Jinka (approx. 1-2 hours from Key Afer). Check into your hotel and have lunch.
⦁ Afternoon: Drive to Mursi Village
⦁ After lunch, drive to Mago National Park (a relatively short drive, but conditions can vary).
⦁ Enter Mago National Park and proceed to a Mursi village. The Mursi are one of the most iconic tribes in the Omo Valley, particularly known for their women wearing large clay or wooden lip plates and earlobes stretched with discs.
⦁ Interact with the Mursi (with your guide’s assistance and respect for their customs, including photography fees) and learn about their unique traditions and way of life.
⦁ Evening:
⦁ Return to Jinka for dinner and overnight.
Day 5: Jinka (Ari Tribe/Museum) – Departure

⦁ Afterward, visit an Ari village just outside Jinka. The Ari are the largest tribe in the Omo Valley and are known for their fertile lands, traditional farming practices, and skilled artisans (potters, blacksmiths). You can observe their daily activities, brewing local beer, and making pottery.
⦁ Lunch:
⦁ Have lunch in Jinka.
⦁ Afternoon (Departure):
⦁ Transfer to Jinka Airport for your domestic flight back to Addis Ababa (recommended).
⦁ Alternatively, begin the long drive back to Arba Minch (which would require another overnight there) or even further towards Addis Ababa if you have more time
