It is recognized as the largest Khat-trading center worldwide, open 24/7, Khat leaves are harvested locally and exported to Somalia Djibouti and Europe, and the Arabian Peninsula. Babile Camel Markets
Held every Monday morning, the Babile Camel Market is one of the largest in the region. Traders from Ethiopia, Djibouti, and Somalia converge here to buy and sell camels. Visitors can witness age-old trading practices, where deals are often sealed with a simple handshake.
Dakhata Valley (Valley of Marvels)
Approximately 7 km from Babile lies the Dakhata Valley, famed for its unique rock formations. These natural sculptures, resembling pillars and columns, are the result of centuries of erosion. The valley offers a surreal landscape that captivates geologists and tourists alike. It’s also a habitat for diverse bird species, making it a haven for birdwatchers.
Babile Elephant Sanctuary
The Babile Elephant Sanctuary, also known as the Harar Wildlife Sanctuary, is a significant protected area in eastern Ethiopia, established in 1970. It covers approximately 6,982 square kilometers. The sanctuary is home to a unique and isolated population of African bush elephants (Loxodonta africana oleansie), with an estimated 200–300 individuals. This group represents one of the last remaining elephant populations in the Horn of Africa. The area encompasses diverse habitats, including acacia woodlands, scrublands, savannahs, and cactus regions. Approximately 237 plant species from 57 families have been recorded.
