Overview

Gambella National Park is one of Ethiopia’s most significant and biologically diverse protected areas. Located in the western part of the country, near the border with South Sudan, the park encompasses a vast expanse of wilderness that is home to a remarkable array of wildlife, including some species that are rare or absent elsewhere in Ethiopia. Established primarily to protect the unique ecosystem of the region and its wildlife, Gambella National Park offers visitors a chance to experience a distinct and less-explored part of Ethiopia’s natural heritage.

Gambella National Park is renowned for its exceptional wildlife diversity, including several species that are rare or absent in other parts of Ethiopia. The park is particularly famous for hosting one of Africa’s largest mammal migrations, including Elephants (Loxodonta africana), White-Eared Kob, Buffalo (Syncerus caffer), Giraffes (Giraffa camelopardalis),
Lions (Panthera leo), Leopards (Panthera pardus), and Spotted Hyenas (Crocuta crocuta) and other species of mammals, birds, amphibians and reptiles.

Itinerary

This itinerary is designed to maximize your wildlife viewing and cultural experiences, with two nights in Gambela town.

Day 1: Arrival in Gambela & Afternoon Game Drive

Morning: Transfer from your hotel in Addis Ababa to Bole International Airport for your domestic flight to Gambela.

Flight: Addis Ababa to Gambela (approx. 1 hour 20 minutes).

Upon arrival at Gambela Airport, you will be met by your local guide and driver. Transfer to your hotel in Gambela town (e.g., Grand Resort & Spa Gambela – one of the few established options). Check in and have lunch at the hotel or a local restaurant.

Afternoon: After lunch, embark on your first game drive into Gambela National Park. You’ll explore the northern and central sections of the park, focusing on areas known for wildlife sightings. Look out for various antelope species like topi, Lelwel hartebeest, and waterbuck. Keep an eye out for larger mammals such as elephants, buffalo, and potentially even lions or leopards if you’re lucky. Return to your hotel in Gambela town for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 2: White-Eared Kob Migration, Nile Lechwe & Cultural Immersion

Morning: Early breakfast at the hotel. Head deep into Gambela National Park. Today’s focus will be on tracking the White-eared Kob migration (if visiting during the season) and searching for the rare Nile Lechwe in the extensive wetlands. Continue your game drive through different habitats, including the vast savannas and riverine forests. This is also an excellent day for birdwatching, with chances to spot the elusive Shoebill stork (in the swamps) and numerous other wetland and savannah bird species.
Lunch: Enjoy a packed picnic lunch amidst the wilderness of the park.

Afternoon: After more wildlife viewing, experience a boat trip on the Baro River. This offers a unique perspective on the park’s ecosystem, with opportunities to see hippos, large Nile crocodiles, and diverse birdlife from the water. Following the park exploration, visit an Anuak village near Gambela town. Engage with the local community, learn about their unique Nilotic culture, traditional practices, and way of life.
Evening: Return to your hotel in Gambela town for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 3: Local Market, Italian Fort & Departure

Morning: Breakfast at the hotel. Visit the local market in Gambela town. This is a bustling hub where you can observe daily life and perhaps find unique local crafts. Visit the historic Italian Fort, a colonial-era structure that offers a glimpse into the region’s past. Depending on your flight schedule, you might have time for a final brief activity or simply relax at the hotel.
Lunch: Have lunch at your hotel or a local restaurant in Gambela town.

Afternoon: Transfer to Gambela Airport for your domestic flight back to Addis Ababa.

Flight: Gambela to Addis Ababa. Upon arrival in Addis Ababa, transfer to Bole International Airport for your international departure or to your hotel.
