Itinerary
A 3-day, 2-night itinerary for Bale Mountains National Park focuses on its unique wildlife and stunning landscapes.
Day 1: Addis Ababa to Dinsho & Gaysay Grasslands (Bale Mountains National Park)
Morning (7:00 AM): Departure from Addis Ababa
⦁ Start your journey from Addis Ababa, driving southeast towards the Bale Mountains. This is a significant drive (approx. 7-8 hours). Enjoy the scenic landscapes as you pass through the Ethiopian Rift Valley. You might make a brief stop at Lake Ziway for birdwatching.
Lunch (Around 1:00 PM): En Route
⦁ Have lunch at a local restaurant in a town like Shashamane or Dodola.
Late Afternoon (3:00 PM – 4:00 PM): Arrival at Dinsho & Gaysay Grasslands
⦁ Arrive at Dinsho, the headquarters of Bale Mountains National Park.
⦁ Check into your chosen accommodation in Dinsho, Goba, or Robe (Goba and Robe are larger towns about 45 minutes to an hour from Dinsho).
⦁ After checking in, head to the Gaysay Grasslands, just a short drive from Dinsho. This area is known for its high concentration of endemic species.
⦁ Take a leisurely walk or a short game drive to spot the iconic Mountain Nyala, Menelik’s Bushbuck, warthogs, and various endemic birds like Rouget’s Rail and Abyssinian Catbird.
Evening: Dinner and overnight at your chosen lodge or hotel.
Day 2: Sanetti Plateau & Harenna Forest (Bale Mountains National Park)
Morning (7:30 AM): Sanetti Plateau Expedition
⦁ After an early breakfast, set off for the Sanetti Plateau, the largest Afro-alpine ecosystem in Africa. This is a highlight of your trip.
⦁ Drive along the highest all-weather road in Africa, ascending to over 4,000 meters.
This is the best place in the world to spot the critically endangered Ethiopian Wolf, often seen hunting its primary prey, the giant mole-rat (another endemic species).
⦁ Take your time exploring the plateau, marveling at the unique Afro-alpine vegetation, including giant lobelias, and the stunning views of glacial lakes and volcanic peaks.
⦁ Drive to Tulu Dimtu (4,377m), the second-highest peak in Ethiopia, for breathtaking panoramic views of the entire park.
Lunch (Picnic Lunch): Sanetti Plateau
Enjoy a packed picnic lunch amidst the stunning high-altitude scenery.
Afternoon (2:00 PM – 5:00 PM): Harenna Forest Exploration
⦁ Descend the southern slopes of the Sanetti Plateau into the dense Harenna Forest, one of Ethiopia’s largest cloud forests.
⦁ The forest offers a stark contrast to the plateau. While wildlife sightings (like Bale monkeys, giant forest hogs, or even leopards) are more challenging due to the dense cover, the forest itself is incredibly biodiverse and home to unique flora and birdlife.
⦁ Enjoy a nature walk along one of the forest trails, appreciating the lush environment and listening for the calls of various birds.
Evening
⦁ Return to your lodge/hotel for dinner and overnight.
Day 3: Dinsho Area & Return to Addis Ababa
Morning (8:00 AM): Morning Walk/Optional Activities
⦁ After breakfast, enjoy a final morning walk around the Dinsho area, or revisit the Gaysay Grasslands for more wildlife viewing.
⦁ Alternatively, you could opt for a short horseback ride (arranged locally) around Dinsho, which can be a fun way to experience the landscape. This is a good opportunity for some last-minute birdwatching or to try and spot any animals you might have missed.
Late Morning (10:00 AM): Depart from Bale Mountains
Begin your drive back to Addis Ababa.
Lunch (Around 1:00 PM): En Route
Stop for lunch at a restaurant in a town along the way (e.g., Shashemene or Ziway).
